I'm posting this because I have my doubts that people know about this.

Firstly, weight. Aftermarket rims are lighter than stock by a few kilos. Size affects weight as well, stock size rims being lightest, +2 inch rims being heaviest.

Weight per end:
Stock: "0" kg.
Aftermarket, stock size: -6 kg.
Aftermarket, +1: -4kg
Aftermarket, +2: -2kg

So a set of four aftermarket wheels in stock size will strip 12kg off your car. You'd think that would be the best of all worlds, but... Not quite.

Traction: Larger wheel sizes add traction. They're slightly wider than stock and therefore the contact patch is larger. Larger contact patch means more grip.

Since we can mismatch wheels, we can use tire sizing to help rebalance a car. Oversteery cars will want/need more rear grip, understeery cars will want more up front. Bigger fronts = more front grip, bigger rears = more rear grip.

Also, if you are a truly cheap bastich, you CAN upsize the stock rims. Oddly, Genki didn't have the foresight to make upsized stock rims weigh more, so it's a difference of 4kg for 4 +2" stock rims vs 4 +2" aftermarket wheels. Your choice whether you want to spend the 220k or not, but even for a just-started-with-base sponsors game save, it's one gymkhana event's difference.

Good post. I was gonna ask about the weight differences, but you covered that part already! :)

I wonder if there is a difference between the wheels available to buy versus the wheels you find in the Used Car area (e.g. hidden wheel sets).

Hmm, I'll check.

EDIT: No, same difference in weight at least...

I just wanted to say I actually tried this out in TXR3 to control a wildly oversteering Toyota Chaser. Seemed like anything could make that thing spin out, and I had to be very delicate with the steering because of that. But as soon as I put on regular rims at the front, and +2 inch rims at the back, the oversteering was dramatically reduced. This helped greatly while I was racing on the Wangan.

Thanks for making this post!

yeah well that's not only in-game. in reality, having larger rims combined with smaller tires improves response, but diminishes grip. vice-versa is true too.

I find that i'm always sticking +2 aftermarket wheels on my cars for the slight added grip.
Having an oversteery car is great and all, but spending the entire length of a straight correcting your car is not fun (talking from experience  )

I never think of performance when i put wheels on my car, I just make them how i think they best look, like i wouldn't put low profile tyres on an ae86, becuse it just doesn't suit in my opinion. Just like this

well for the looks of it, I like big rims, but not SO big. the ones in my sig's pic are pertty much at the limit for me. having smaller tires is cool, but having just a rubber band isn't

That AE86 doesn't look half bad.
I'd like to have it, if I could.
