Post subject:  driving game awards

just felt like coming up with my own award list that anyone can make up their own. Some awards can't be given to things I havent tried.

Best overall-TXRD2
TXR3 gets an honorable mention

Best courses-Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2

Best tuning(handling)-TXRD2

Best tuning(visuals)-TXR3

Most innovative racing style- Shoutoku/Tokyo Xtreme Racer series

Best Engine sound-Need for speed U (eventhough i only watched a vid)

Best background noises-TXRD2
bird chirping, wind howling, rain, etc is rare for driving games.

Best career mode-TXRD2
BBS and ability to gain friends is great

Best force feedback-TXRD2

Best drift mode-GT5
TXRD2 is more fun when you get things right with it's combo system, however it's also often too frustrating how you nudge a corner and can't get any points back even if you have an almost perfect corner.

best crashes-GRID(I only watched the videos)

Best Graphics-Automodelista
It might be last gen, and not realistic, but it doesn't even try. It has it's own style which will not be replaced soon, and still looks better than drift city, and GT Pro

Best music-Drift City

Best storyline- Drift City

Best intro-Kaido battle 1/TXRD1

Best handling physics -Live for speed

Best console physics/handling-TXRD2
GT5 or Forza maybe better when I try them with a proper wheel. TXRD2 wins since it's the only thing that captures good elevation changes, braking, instability at proper speeds, great force feedback, etc.

Best car selection- Forza 2
Haven't tried it. GT4 had more cars, but forza's still the only one with Ferarri, Lamborghini, Porsche. A lot of GT exclusive cars are things I dont care about like the 1 PS stuff.

Biggest dissapointment-Automodelista
GT4 and D1GP are really honorable mentions

worst game-Juiced
which one did I try?

worst career- Enthusia
Are you supposed to gain or lose points? I win I gain sometimes, lose sometimes, remain the same at others.

worst glitches- TXR3
the way they made the game unbeatable without cheat devices, when it was ported. Even without counting that sometimes the game freezes in menus and weird things happen when the races start.

Post subject:  Re: driving game awards

hm

i think Juiced is more like "Most difference between original and sequel"

this DEFINATELY fits, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who agrees that it changed for the worse.

you have to award "best crashes" as a tie between DiRT and GRiD since they're the same developer/physics...but yea that was well awarded.

I think there should also be a category for "Best Handheld" Which obviously would go to "GT3 Advanced"

Maybe even "Best Dirt title" which would be pretty hard, Either "Colin McRae's Rally 3" or "DiRT"

GT5 full version isn't out yet though and the current prologue has around 50 cars. It's hard rewarding some thing like that.

Post subject:  Re: driving game awards

heres mine

Best overall- Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2

Best courses- Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (although i'd take the Touges from ID any day)

Best tuning(handling)- DiRT/GRiD (i really loved the hybrid of arcade/sim feel in these games)

Best tuning(visuals)- TFaF Tokyo Drift (May not be a great game, but come on, DRIFT CHARMS/Valve LEDS!!!)

Most innovative racing style- GT series (drifty but controllable physics made it easy to pick up)

Best Engine sound- GT Advanced Series (i know the sound kinda droned, but for a handheld, it was incredible sound)

Best background noises- Midtown Madness 2 (the game may have been a budget title, but like TXRD:2, MM2 had great sounds like boats in the bay, birds, etc...)

Best career mode- TXRD:2 (like said before, the utilization of the BBS and used car dealers and such, plus the individual stories of rivals has made this one of my favorite games)

Best force feedback- i havn't really played GT4 with a wheel much, but i really loved playing Colin McRae's Rally 3 with one

Best drift mode-
Quote:
Juiced 2
good tandems :]

- I agree

best crashes- GRiD/DiRT (the damage models are excellent and extremely realistic)

Best Graphics- GT5

Best music- Midnight Club series (a great mix of trance/hip hop/rock music)

Best storyline- NFS Pro Street (i really like the cliched idea of an upcomming racer....but PS did it really well)

Best intro- Kaido Battle 2 Chain Reaction (The idea of an upcomming racer again...but it played out almost like an Anime)

Best handling physics - GT Series (just for its simplicity)

Best console physics/handling- Midnight Club series (It feels very arcadey; was fun to play with others)

Best car selection- GT4 (although the TXR Series is close behind, i mean Cedrics, Stageas, Sileighties, it has it all)

Biggest dissapointment- Tie between Juiced 2, NFS Undercover, or TFaF Tokyo Drift (for the PS2 all the games were failures)

worst game- Need For Speed Undercover (PS2; it was a great game...5 years ago when they released it as Most Wanted)

worst career- GT4...no story whatso-ever, so i guess that doesnt count..

worst glitches-
Quote:
N/A , dont seach for them
neither do I

I don't understand why people don't like the original juiced. It was an incredible game IMO; i mean it was the tuning and atmosphere of the NFS series, with a simulation-like feel. The story wasnt that great, but i mean you can race for pink slips!!! i really do think Juiced 1 was better than Juiced 2 (well at least for the PS2)

juiced 1 was way better than 2

update

best engine sound: Enthusia
it sounds a lot better in 1st person view and is the only game with the beeping gear shift indicator for RX-7 cars. I have to give it the win just for that.

How about Ridge Racer. It may not be realistic, but its fun like hell. That's the series that introduced me to drifting, and that was back in 1995.

don't forget

"most degrading series ever" which goes to NFS. from the moment they went to Most Wanted, it got downwards ever since. not bad for a game that they announce each year as "the next generation of racing".

hehe ofcourse, nothing comes close.
Gran turismo: fake overrated sim. Forza: around the same or maybe light years ahead if you count GT4 being a sim, which also seems to make me want to plug in TXRD2 again everytime i play it. NFS: controversial but thats about it. GRID/Dirt: overrated. Juiced: ehhh. PC games: realistic but not many good courses, and not really fun or addictive. & yes, i'm being serious.

I would say enthusia is above average as a console sim, mediocre as a racing game with fun factor, and below txrd2 in realism.

Time to write a review thats better than any pro review you'll find. i guess i already did on gamespot but that ones really brief. I'll give it a 6 out of 10. If you want to compare my scores, I give TXRD2 a 10, TXR3 a 8.5(would be higher if not for translation bugs), Gran turismo 4 a 4.5.

Realism: Enthusia's light years ahead of GT4 as a sim, because of handling. Not really fun as a game, and career modes way too confusing. Cars handle most similar to their real version in stock form, since they either come with tcs, abs, asm, etc or not. I found it useful for learning to drift in the beginning since it is a little easier than TXRD2. Turning at low speeds is pretty good, meaning it's easy to just pick up a car and drift without tuning. It doesn't handle anywhere near as good as TXRD2 at high speed, or have tire wear, brake fade, proper braking feel though. Gravity changes due to elevation is weaker than TXRD2. Force feed back is not as good as TXRD2(if you play with a logitech wheel). You also can't train like you would in TXRD2 because of all the customization options. No driving with better front wheel traction, while making your LSD better and maxing out power. No going in the rain with the wrong wheels, etc. 6 out of 10

Graphics: Not bad. Not realistic as GT4, but it has way better rain graphics. Nuremburgring looks realy gloomy for some reason. Not as plsing as TXRD2.
6out of 10

tuning: Not much. When you win races your car levels up, and gets a weight reduction, better tire, or engine power. problem is that it's automatic, you can't decide, and once it lvls up a certain part you can't lvl down, and i've always wanted to test how a car would be like with lvl 10 power/weight, and lvl 1 tires. You get to customize suspension but thats the only customization. no braking strength, tcs, balance, etc.
2 out of 10

Career mode is the most frustrating ever. I don't even know what i'm supposed to do, sometimes I win an get points, sometimes I lose points. Menus are also frustrating. instead of selecting a course, then reverse, rain, etc. they are all listed as seperate courses. building a garage and finding the right car may take some time as well, eventhough you can minimize your search, you have to do it every time. It's also stupit how you get penalized for dropping 1 or 2 outter tires off a gutter. You are not off course and still in control.

courses: Theres only 2 real courses, tsukaba and nuremburgring. while all others are fictional. I found one of the mountain ones okay for drifting and theres a fictional touge course. nothing as good as TXRD2 touge courses. You get to race in rain and night in some courses which is good. Might take awhile to select since they are all listed as different courses. No fog, storm, wind or anything else.
3 out of 10

music: mediocre

engine sound: I guess it's the only game I tried which had the beeping gear shift indicator in RX-7 cars, but unfortunetly only in 1st person view, along with some other sounds. There doesnt seem to be an option like window on/off in TXRD2. the engines are not bad, but nothing specular.
7 out of 10

car selection: It's pretty good. you've got concept cars, wrc cars, road cars, etc. I havent really unlocked too much since i rarely play this game though, so i wouldn't know them all. Getting cars you want is completely based on luck(slot machine when you place in races). There's also a mode you can hit targets at a certain speed which you need to do to unlock cars, challenging but I never found it really fun and more of an annoyance after awhile.
9 out of 10

Considering it's cheap now, and you may like another racing game it may be worth the purchase. maybe driving on courses like tsakaba, and sampling some fictional courses(I personally prefer real) with semi realistic physics on a ps2 is good enough of a reason on it's own to own this game. Maybe it's useful for crosstraining and getting better at TXRD2.

I just wrote it up inbetween chatting with some ppl. it takes awhile to wait for there replies. I always think that sites like IGN or gamespot should hire someone like me just to do there driving game reviews, or probably someone who games and does actual real motorsports, and someone thats actually good at fighting games to do there fighting game reviews.

The staff they have now just don't seem qualified to do full reviews. It'll be like me doing a fps review, and I hate all fps games.

I thimk you should be a reviewer. Since you have an eye for detail. I bet some of the "pro" reviewers hardly play the game before reviewing it.
