I would think they are reasonably popular since the drift/touge scene is a lot bigger there, and they managed to support themselves for years, as well as come up with semi big budget games, which involve lazer tracing courses, lots of liscenced cars, involving professional racers, etc.

The last I was in Japan, it was quite popular. That was 2 summers ago.
