This series of games is mostly on the GBA....
there were 4 GT games on the GBA, as well as a re-make on the wii

GT1 was a very decent racing game (reselbled Gran Turismo) produced by M2TO (i think) and THQ... It featured over 40 Liscensed JDM cars, as well as an Aero kit for each. Mind you this is the GBA.... the graphics looked very decent for a 1999 system

the physics were XTREMELY drifty, but it was cool once you get a hang of it
GT2 was a rally based game, very good for the GBA. With officially liscensed rally cars from Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, and Mitsubishi, it was very close to real rally on a hand-held. Like the last one, the physics were very drifty.

GT3 was an expansion of GT1, as it is the true japanese sequel... With more than 90, yes more than 90, liscensed cars in this GBA game, it has to be one of the best racing games on the GBA. Physics system is the same, but it works very well.

I don't quite know the title, but there is a JGTC version of this game, featuring very accurate models of JGTC cars (like the RX-7, Porsche 996, Impreza, etc) on a handheld. I have only played this game once when i was very young (my friend used to have it), but it was a very good racing game for the GBA.

The latest installment is GT-Pro series, which was released on the Wii. As one of the first Liscened-car racing games on the system, it brought the drifty physics along with the multiple cars; and with the Wii's technology, it actually felt like you were controling a car (ok well this is a bit exaggerated).... Another thing this game featured that the original didnt have, was elevated maps, in the GBA versions, all the maps were flat (come on, its a GBA titile, you gotta give props to what was done)...

IMO, these games were great. Decent 8-bit music that was very catchy made the game even more enjoyable.....plus when you can get GT1/2/3 on a game pack for $20 at wall mart, why can't you pick it up... .i promise you, it'll give you more enjoyment than NFS UC

I have the first one and I was really impressed with it when it was new...but it hasn't aged well. That's why I never bothered buying any of the ones that came out afterwards.

And personally, I think racing games on portable systems just don't work. The main reason is that playing a racing game effectively requires you to see what you're doing at all times. And between small screens and screen glare on portables...it's pretty hard to see what's happening. And let's not even get into the myriad distractions you're going to run into, when you take your portable into public places. This is why I never buy racing games on portables, even though I love the genre.

i do have to agree. Although they are for handhelds, and racing games usually don't work on hand helds, they are pretty decent. I do still take it out to play on my SP just to make Tandem runs against my ghost.

IMO, for a portable game, it was very decent....physics, graphics, map design...all pretty decent for a hand held.... as for portability....this series provided me with tons of hours on those trips out to vegas (i live in LA)

i saw the preview of GT pro. didn't realize how old the series was. it might have been the first attempted at drifting with reasonable physics if what you said is true.

thought i might be interested or might not. automodelista had better graphics but odd physics. the wii mote won't be as fun as playing iwth a DFP for sure

i guess i should mention its not Auto Modellista drifty, its like, you enter a corner, and hit the brake, and automatic drift; just moniter the angle, and it looks amazing....

atcually, its pretty tough to simultaneously make the drift fast, look good, and not hit walls :D
